I’m often amazed by the amount of people I’ve crossed paths with and how many nameless individuals have positively altered the course of my life. Not so much through their words—although words are incredibly powerful—but through the pure exchange of expression and emotions. 

Several years back while I was roaming the globe as an amateur photographer I found myself in Bali enjoying a casual walk along the edge of rice fields and thick patches of trees and brush, with other like-minded travelers.

Through various bits of laughter and conversation a small group of us serendipitously stumbled onto the grounds of a rural school of young Balinese children playing outside.

Not wanting to disrupt their activities, we quickly turned back towards the road. However, it was already to late.

By the time we took three steps we were surrounded in a sea of curious, exuberant, giggling children all wanting to practice their English and talk with us about everything. Seeing that their teacher was pleased to have us there, we began to ask their names and ages when one or two children blurted out:

“Picture. Picture! Take picture!!”

Not being able to resist the request I swiftly began capturing a series of photos with the above picture being my all-time favorite.

Through the years I’ve reflected many times upon that day and gaze upon the photo frequently. I don’t remember all the things we shared or how long we stayed. But I can tell you that every time recall that day in my mind, my heart floods with the clarity that only love, gratitude, and joy can offer.
